What is the density of glass wool insulation?
2026-04-02
The density of glass wool (fiberglass insulation) serves as an important parameter influencing the insulation characteristics, the degree of sound insulation, and the mechanical strength of the material. Customers often ask what density of fiberglass insulation (kg/m³) is normal and which applications are appropriate for various density values.

Standard densities of glass wool (kg/m³):
- 10-16 kg/m³: very lightweight, applied for attics and ceilings; gives good heat-insulating properties and a low price, easy to install.
- 24-32 kg/m³: most frequently used in residential construction, has excellent heat and sound-insulation properties, suitable for insulation of walls, roofs, and attics.
- 40-48 kg/m³: high density glass wool insulation; intended for applications demanding strength and increased sound insulation capabilities, for example, industrial plants, pipes, and ducts.
- 60-100 kg/m³: special high-density product, designed for acoustic engineering and applications where increased strength is needed.
Increasing density leads to a harder material, improved sound insulation, especially in low frequencies, and increased strength, however, it increases the weight and costs. Thermal conductivity of fiberglass is between 0.034 and 0.042 W/mK; within the appropriate range of density values, no significant effect on the insulation capacity.
United Insulation exports its glass wool insulation products, with a comprehensive range of densities from 10-96 kg/m³. Centrifugal spinning technique is used for all products, ensuring homogeneous fibers, excellent durability, and waterproofing capacity of no less than 98%. Our products are both CE certified and GREENGUARD Gold indoor air quality certified.
FAQ 1: Is higher glass wool density always better? (optimum glass wool density)
No. The optimum density for insulation of residential buildings should be 24-40 kg/m³. At lower densities, the product is highly compressible, whereas at higher densities, they become very expensive and difficult to apply.
FAQ 2: What density is suitable for attic insulation? (glass wool insulation density for attic)
Suggested: 12-24 kg/m³. This density is light enough not to burden the ceiling but provides effective insulation.
FAQ 3: What is the best density for wall insulation?
24-32 kg/m³ would be ideal since it fits the spaces between joists while having high compressive resistance and sound absorbency.
FAQ 4: Does density affect sound absorption performance?
A huge impact is exerted by density. High-density glass wool (>40 kg/m³) offers superior low-frequency sound absorption and is widely used in fiberglass soundproof insulation.
FAQ 5: How to choose glass wool density for a project? (how to choose glass wool density kg/m³)
Selection is based on the installation site, R-value, fireproofing, soundproofing, and budget. We can give you free technical assistance.
FAQ 6: Can Unitedinsulation customize glass wool density?
Yes, we support the production of products with specific densities according to project requirements, meeting the personalized needs of the glass wool density guide.
FAQ 7: What is the difference in performance between glass wool and rock wool due to density?
Glass wool offers more flexibility in density, while rock wool typically has a higher density and is suitable for fire-prone applications; both can be used in combination.
